Worldly Travels
Recently Steve and his father took a trip to the region of
Antalya
in the country of
Turkey
. They spent a week traveling along the
Mediterranean
Coast
and visiting antiquity sites from the Lycian period. Steve’s father, Bill, was in the Peace Corps in a village in south central
Turkey
for two years after college. Because he speaks Turkish they were able to go many places that are not usually frequented by tourists. This was Steve’s second time in
Turkey
with his father and he looks forward to more trips in the future. The highlights of the trip included visiting the fairly remote mountaintop
village
of
Selge
that has been continuously inhabited for more than 2000 years. It is reached by crossing over a bridge dating from the Roman times. The bridge, originally constructed during a time when chariots were often used, was not sized for rental cars common today. The car barely fit across! The picture is from Teremessos, a Lycian city that withstood attacks by Alexander the Great.

Let it Snow!
Grand Marais topped the charts this weekend by getting 18-22 inches of snow on Saturday. Ski and snowmobile trails are getting groomed as we speak. Lutsen Mountains has a 12-24" base of snow. It makes for a fun winter wonderland - except when you have to shovel it!!

Ships Close to Shore
A couple times a year we are treated to the sight of a ship close to shore here in Lutsen. Debby commented this morning that one went by her house that she could almost swim to. Exciting times here in Lutsen on a cloudy fall day!

Big River
After days of rain, the Cascade River is at a high. Steve took this picture moments ago from the Cascade State Park pull off on Highway 61. We need the rain, but I think all in Cook County are looking forward to seeing the sun. The rain does make for a great drive up the shore - seeing the rivers, streams and waterfalls like they usually are in the spring.

Travel Channel Visits the Finn House
Spring 2008 you may see the Finn House on the Travel Channel. It was recently the setting for the show Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. The show was on a tour of the North Shore and made stops in Grand Marais and Two Harbors. Shawn Perich and his wife cooked grouse and road kill moose for Zimmern. Below left you can see Zimmern (seated in the black jacket) inside the Finn House chowing down on North Shore game, and beside that, Zimmern and Perich look out at a foggy Finn House shoreline.

Are the Leaves Really Changing Already?
Some have wondered if we are having an early fall because some of the trees on the North Shore have already started changing. It is rather startling being that it seems like summer is still here, although with cold weather like today, who knows. A news report did come out last week saying that the leaves are changing due to an extremely dry summer. Fire restrictions are on, so no campfires or burning is allowed.
Despite the dry summer, blueberry picking by many at Cascade has been good. The berries are a bit small, but will still taste good in a summer pie.

What in the World? Friends with Wings Part 2!
Today outside the Clearview Building is the weirdest looking bug we have ever seen. Upon first glance from the side, it looked like a leaf. John OB says it is a Luna Moth. The story on the spots on the wings goes like this: make the moth look like a scary face, something like an owl which a little moth eating bird would not want to approach.

Friends with Wings
Lately I have been reminded of how much I love North Shore in the spring. Last week the butterflies were amazing. It seemed every time I went outside they were fluttering all around. This week we have been blessed with dragonflies. I can look out my window at home and see them flying all over the sky. It is pretty common for my husband and I to sit on our patio after work and look for the hummingbirds coming to our feeder and watch in amazement at how fast they move. To top off my excitement for spring, on our drive up the shore on Sunday from Duluth we noticed the Lupine have begun to bloom.

North Shore Featured in New York Times Article
It's not every day that the North Shore of Minnesota gets featured in a national newspaper like the New Yorks Times. Finn-Olaf Jones writes about our area in his article entitled "Minnesota's "Freshwater Ocean" Attracts a New Generation." The article speaks about the North Shore's history, people, and places. Skylark, a home we have for sale in the Finland area is pictured as well as a quote from our own Tom Fiero. We are excited about the national press and hope it shines a positive light on our wonderful area.

Winter Camping
For the past couple of weeks, there had been some loose talk around the office of putting together a short winter camping trip. After getting busy schedules synched-up, John, Sally, and I were able to get a few days off and head out into the wilderness.
It was fantastic: perfect skiing conditions, warm weather, and a good group of folks. We met at a pre-determined location on
Alton
Lake
in the BWCAW, where John had graciously set up his canvas tent equipped with a wood stove. By the time we arrived in the evening, John had a nice fire going, and we started dinner.

Our Friend Deerdra
This is the young doe we call “Deerdra,” who for the past few weeks has been loitering behind the
Clearview
Building
, eating the tart, juicy, very ripe crab apples that have fallen from the tree you see behind her. Though she seems fierce, she will not bite.
Deerdra is curious about people and will sometimes run forward, rather than away, when people walk by; stopping, however, at a safe distance. She lets some people approach to within six feet or so, but runs away from tall fast-walking people wearing hats.
Sally rounded the corner the other day to see Deerdra snout-to-beak with a male grouse putting on his fanciest display for the female grouse that was perched high above in the crab apple tree. It was truly a banner wildlife day!
North
Shore
residents who have vegetable or flower gardens are treated to a variation of this theme, as deer wander into their yards, often under cover of twilight or darkness, to browse. They regard gardens not guarded by fences or dogs as open air cafeterias, and persistently dig up carrots, beets and flower bulbs with their sharp hooves until they’ve eaten their fill.

Yesterday afternoon we looked out to see an ore boat hugging the shore. It seemed like you could almost touch it from outside our office it was so close. The weather has made

Fall is officially here but may not last for long due to the lack of rain in our area. Many of the leaves have started to change making the area a beautiful tapestry of colors. Along with being a great time to check out the changing leaves, it is also a great time to look at real estate. The lots are easier to navigate, you can if the property has a lake view, and there are no bugs!

Wednesday night John and Steve took their two oldest kids (Will-4 and Hazel-3) for their first ever canoe camping trip. They used
Sawbill
Lake
as their entry point to the BWCA, which is very fitting since John and Steve both worked at Sawbill Canoe Outfitters for several years. Will and Hazel proved to be naturals to canoe camping. Of particular interest and concern to them was practicing bear scaring techniques. Wildlife sightings included a toad (Will caught by the light of his headlamp), mouse, and several loons. John and Steve had to keep the trip to about 18 hours total given that this is a busy time of year for Real Estate.

Last night Steve and Kate Surbaugh (owners of Cascade Property Sales and Vacation Rentals), and Bill and Cindy Hansen (of Sawbill Canoe Outfitters), hosted a pizza party and slide show for The Wilderness Classroom Organization (WCO) at the
North
House
Folk
School
in Grand Marias. The party and slide show highlighted previous expeditions Eric Frost, Realtor® at Cascade Property Sales, and Dave Freeman have conducted throughout the world. Dave and Eric are Co-Directors of The Wilderness Classroom.
The Wilderness Classroom is a non-profit 501c(3) organization that strives to bring wilderness and real-life adventures into classrooms located around the world. The Wilderness Classroom currently works with over 32,000 students who interact with the expedition leaders through computer technology. As they explore engaging mysteries, students improve their skills in leadership and critical thinking, while gaining knowledge of geography, earth sciences, environmental sciences, ecology, cultural awareness, conservation, reading, mathematics, and other core academic areas. The student participants become active explorers through every step of the live expedition.
This morning, Dave Freeman and Amy Voytilla set off from the Grand Marais beach to circumnavigate
Lake Superior
by kayak. The adventure will take 6-7 weeks, and the team will update their website, www.wildernessclassroom.com with photos, videos, and a complete curriculum for students from 3rd - 8th grade.
In looking toward the future, The Wilderness Classroom will embark on its most ambitious project to date. The Trans America Expedition will occur between March 2007 and April 2013. During this time, WCO will conduct a series of 8 online expeditions, between 7 and 12 weeks in length, as Dave Freeman and Eric Frost attempt to become the first people to cross both North and
South America
by canoe and dogsled, traversing approximately 11,000 miles.
The goal of the Trans-America Expedition is to raise awareness about the important role the world's forests play in controlling climate change, and empower people to make changes in their lives, which will protect the world's remaining forests and combat global warming. The Trans-America Expedition hopes to reach over 1 million students.
Please feel free to email Eric at eric@cascadepropertysales.com to learn more about the Wilderness Classroom or how you can get involved.

We are in avocado heaven here due to a very special client with ties to wonderful fruits and
vegetables. We often don’t see such wonderful avocados in the Northwoods and are thankful for their presence. We are so
happy – guacamole for everyone!!
We also had a chance to beautify Highway 61 as part of the adopt-a-highway program. No one has brought in the
“weirdest item” yet and whomever does wins a prize. We are not sure anything can beat the almost live fish
Kris brought in last fall.
With Memorial Weekend here, many friends and guest are enjoying the Northwoods with us. We are excited for the busy weekend!
Stop in and say hi!

Cold and rainy – typical as the Minnesota fishing opener draws near. A blanket of mist, sufficient to engage the harbor fog horns, has kept a damp chill in the woods. All this coolness after a sunny April has us wondering about the right order of things. The bonus of that April warmth was a premature end to winter’s grip on the lakes. Waters inland from Superior iced-out earlier than previously recorded. Though this may be yet another clue that our planet is feverish, we who eagerly await the paddle season were pleased to hear the return of lapping water on shield rock. The folks most affected by the early and fast thaw were the local syrupers. Maple trees produce best when the cold weather lingers – the days become warm, but the nights stay cold. Not the scenario this year. Consequently, less sap was collected. Perhaps, maple syrup prices could be a reliable index of global temperature changes – stock up now!

Less than a week from the July 4th holiday and summer is truly in full swing here in the northwoods. The dragonflies are winging through the sunny skies, looking pretty and eating some of the bugs that can make early June a bit itchy. Roses, lupines, buttercups and hawkweed brighten the woods and the meadows. People have opened their seasonal cabins, shops and restaurants and everyplace - town or country - hums with activity. Be sure to stop in an see us when you swing through Lutsen…we’re open the entire holiday weekend and we’d love to talk to you about your dreams for a northwoods home.

A Superior line is struck across the office windows. Above the line, calm autumn skies, below it are colors: deep lake blue, dark spruce and birch and aspen yellows unmatched in years, like trees full of tangerines. My view on an October Sunday is unencumbered by parked cars. Where are all of you? We are here waiting, eager to help you find your Northwoods view.
Our fall has been mild, only recently turning cold and windy. A big wind a few days ago shook loose most the leaves. The maples are threadbare, but in pockets, the aspen and birch still glow. The tamaracks are also intense this year and will keep color in the forest for another month. Unknown to many are the bright yellows of the Balsam Poplar, also known as Balm of Gilead. These aromatic poplars are very evident in the spring to the nose and are some of the last to lose their leaves in the fall. Recently, I was walking a parcel of land for sale which had a beautiful stand of poplars on a ridge with great views. I began to envision a little cabin during early springtime, woodstove scents mingling with the fragrant balsam poplar buds.
Come see us soon. It is a great time to look at properties on the Northshore. As the woods open up, the lay of the land and winter views become evident.

Cook County real estate produced a lot of berries this year. Whether it was a home on Lake Superior or a “forty” near the Grade Road, berries were in profusion. The cool summer was a boon for the blooms that lead to berries and has drawn out the picking season. Last night, Steve & Kate Surbaugh, their son Will and John Oberholtzer went out to a twenty acre parcel John owns. The raspberries were thick and tasty. A hypothetical discussion ensued about the value of the wild berries on the land and how that value would have to be represented on a purchase agreement. Donning our real estate agent caps, we determined that the berries could be construed like other crops and would be subject to a personal property agreement. Steve Exclaimed, “There’s thousands of dollars of berries here!” John determined, if he ever sells, it will be during the berry harvest. We look forward to helping you find just the right property to act as backdrop and home for your berry picking enjoyment. Or, let us help you sell your home or property. We’ll be sure to help you get the best possible price, every last berry worth.

We first came to Cook County guiding canoe trips
for our college in southern Minnesota. After graduation, we worked
several seasons for the good people at Sawbill Canoe Outfitters
in Tofte. On a whim, we moved to Ely to guide dogsled trips and
had so much fun we stayed a few more years. Eventually, we decided
to give city life a try, and landed in Minneapolis just as the dot-com
boom started booming. We rode it straight through to the bust. And
even though we didn’t become stock option millionaires, it
was an exciting time. But by then, we’d had enough of urban
life, and now we had a son as well—it wasn’t long before
we packed up our things and headed north once again. Now, we’re
happily settled in an old farmhouse under the shadow of Cascade
Bluff...and this time, we’re pretty sure we’ll stay.
